✎ Jensen Huang was born in Taipei, Taiwan, before his family moved to Thailand. When he was nine years old, his parents sent him and his brother to live in America. They ended up at a reform school in Kentucky, where Jensen had to clean toilets every single day and deal with tough kids. After his parents moved to Oregon, Jensen worked as a dishwasher and waiter at Denny’s for five years. He studied electrical engineering at Oregon State University and went to work designing computer chips. In 1993, Jensen met with two other engineers, Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem, at a Denny’s to plan a new company. They raised money from Don Valentine at Sequoia Capital and started Nvidia with just $600.

✎ Nvidia faced major struggles right from the start. Their first graphics chip failed, and their second design was a bad fit for Sega video games. Jensen had to ask Sega’s president, Shoichiro Irimajiri, to release them from their contract while still paying them $5 million. That money kept the business alive for six months, but Jensen still had to lay off more than half of his employees. The team put everything into building one last chip called the Riva 128, which saved Nvidia from shutting down. In 1999, the company went public and created the GeForce 256, which was the first graphics processing unit. They also built graphics hardware for the Microsoft Xbox.

✎ The decision to focus on artificial intelligence transformed Nvidia into a global tech leader. Jensen spent over $1 billion developing CUDA software so programmers could use graphics cards for heavy math problems. Early AI researchers like Andrew Ng, Ian Goodfellow, and the team behind AlexNet used Nvidia cards to teach computers how to process visual data much faster. In 2016, Jensen personally delivered an early AI supercomputer to Elon Musk and OpenAI. By 2024, Nvidia became the most valuable company in the world under Jensen’s leadership, and it later became the first company to hit a $5 trillion valuation.
